70’s and 80’s folks or even those younger than them will say, Archie, Marvel, Mad or Dennis the Menace when we ask them to name some comics that they know. Those aren’t as popular now as they were during their era, so to speak.

Comics are a lot different today. In fact, they are not in any way comparable to the “old comics”. Graphics designs are a lot different and so are the representations of characters. The likes of Archie and Dennis the Menace showed images of real people. Present day comics show images of human beings drawn in funny shapes such as circles and sticks.

Plot and stories of old time comics dwell on values, family life, school life and relationships. Modern day comics are also lessons in life but oftentimes laced with poisonous words. Most of today’s comics like the geeky comics are not appreciated by everyone. In other words, they have limited market.

Geek is a term widely used when referring to individuals whose intellectual bent are mostly disliked. And these are the types of characters presented in geeky comics. Laced with sarcasm, most conversations used in geeky comics may hit someone bull’s eye especially when they speak of failures.

While most children would love to read comics, these are the types, which are not good for them. There are more conversations that use easy and simple words but imply deeper and sometimes hurtful meanings. Some geeky comics feature the negative side of business and being employed, while some speak ill of politicians. Nonetheless, reading them is still worthwhile because one will still experience some good laugh by going through those stuffs.

Today’s comics are not only available on hard copies, but one may take a brief break from working on the computer by browsing through the internet for some good views of popular geeky comic strips available online.

Variations of Geeky Comics

Websites that are featuring geeky comics are getting more and more popular because more and more people not just browse but stay long on certain pages to read. Most readers would also click on “Like” button making these sites the most visited ones.

Even the young businessmen find thrill in reading the geeky conversations about the corporate world, about competence and dealing with rivals. Behind the characters, which are represented through funny shapes, some realities are learned but laughed at.

College students and young adults also patronized the variations of geeky comics that show old comics characters like Superman and Batman in different light. Imagine Superman blowing his top while not being able to access his Google account in geeky comics that show the complications of the internet technology.

In some geeky comics that highlight intolerance of the geeks of people who are difficult to handle, the character of Batman is used while in heated arguments with some monstrous characters.

Another funny but brilliant variation of geeky comics is some realities of everyday living as shown in comic strips of the puppets of the 70’s famous “Muppet Show” interacting with the 90’s X-Men characters.

Superman has never been a rival of Spiderman, nor were they together in any Marvel Comics stories. But on geeky comics, they are shown doing some serious conversations about the disadvantages of computer technology. While in some issues, they are seen fighting off the reality of cloning.

With all the variations combined with great colors and designs, geeky comics are becoming more interesting. These comics have also become popular because they are easily accessible online and they are today’s easy and funny way of learning a lot about modern day realities.

Go ahead and browse the internet. You are sure to find some or all of your favorite characters possessing different personalities. You will surely find one that will stimulate your interest.

One–of-a-Kind Geeky Humor

The particular type of humor that geeks enjoy is a bit more different than your normal, mainstream type of wit. The mainstream type of humor focuses more on the method of the delivery, such as sarcasm or slapstick. Geek humor on the other hand pays more attention to topics that are typical associated with their particular culture, like comic books, gaming, computers, and math. Because of this, geek humor is not likely to be understood nor appreciated by those who do not classify themselves as geeks. Although there may be situations where bits and pieces of the geeky type of humor have become so popular that some people who are not necessarily geeks may have appreciated the geeky jokes, this does not happen too often.

During the height of the internet’s popularity, some of the comics on the web focused on geek humor. One of the most notable ones is “xkcd,” a web comic that was welcomed by the geek community. “xkcd” made use of stick-like figures and did not follow any repeating storyline. It was a huge success among the geek humor aficionados, mainly because of the intelligent jargon it made use of to create the jokes. As a matter of fact, a few strips are not really meant to be humorous. Instead, they displayed the theatrical, geeky manner of how geeks perceive life and love. Another comic that is a very good example of geek humor is “PhD Comics.” This focuses on the funny situations in a student from graduate school’s life. There is a large section on the strip that is devoted to procrastination, as well as the effects that it causes on students in graduate school.

For a non-geek, the geeky type of humor could be mysterious. This could be so because after all, it is not easy to find humor in jargon that is exclusively geek and cannot be understood. Trying to explain the language to someone after he has read or heard a geek joke could end up sounding artificial at best. Nevertheless, geeks do enjoy having fun at the expense of the things they are most interested in, which does a lot to keep them entertained, and makes their life very interesting.

Geek Comics – A Way of Geeky Life

One of the things that are usually associated with geeks is their love for comics. Just like everyone else who needs to find reasons to laugh every once in awhile, reading comics is a favorite hobby of people who like to be referred to as geeky, especially strips that remind them a little bit about themselves and the way they look at how life is. Although somewhat different from what “regular” people consider funny, being that geek terminologies seem to be uniquely their own, geek comics still produce a good laugh (at least for the geeks), or may even veer away from humor to focus on the more serious aspects of a geek’s way of life.

Among the many comics that have won the hearts of geeks and continue to be favorites, “xkcd” ranks high on the list. This particular comic strip was created by a graduate of CNU, has a physics degree, and has apparently done work for NASA. What exactly does “xkcd” stand for? It is actually a word that does not have a phonetic pronunciation. What it means is “a treasured and carefully guarded point in the space of four-character strings.” What that is exactly, only a geek would know. Whatever it is, there must be something in “xkcd” that has made it as popular as it is. Then there is the PhD comic strip, PhD meaning “Piled Higher & Deeper.” This particular comic strip is all about some PhDs and their experiences in graduate school. For geeks who are in any way associated with graduate school, the comic is something to read. Most geeks swear that the PhD may actually be the closest depiction of graduate school anyone can find.

Another geek must-read comic strip is “Abstruse Goose.” This comic strip is a lot newer than a few others but has already built up a huge number of followers. The strip is mostly about idea-motivated jokes with a lot less of the illustration. Geeks who are already familiar with the “Abstruse Goose” have had great fun reading it because of its creativity and outstanding humor.

What Makes Gaming Addictive

What’s with gaming and what makes it so damn addictive that sometimes you don’t realize that you have been at it for 10 hours straight, with no meals? Or do we hear protests from you? (What do you mean ten? I go 15 hours straight!)

So, just what it is about these games – granted, not your ordinary games – that make you want to abandon real life?

It’s the reward, baby. And not just the reward of getting to the end and patting yourself in the back for finishing the game at only 20 hours  where others would take maybe 40 or more. It’s the small rewards along the way. Admit it – how many times did you say I will stop today once I clear this level or level up to __________? But when you reach that level you want, you say, “Ok, once I get past through this annoying boss, I’ll stop.

And again, are you ever finished with the game? After those 20 hours of game play or even before it ends, you find out from another fanatic that there’s this big hidden boss you just have to check out and defeat for yourself.

It’s easy. What? You must be asking yourself – did I read that right? That gaming is easy? Of course not! You need a lot of intelligence, strategy and sometimes cunning to win! Ok, it’s true that gaming poses quite a challenge, but nowhere near the challenge perhaps of your mother screaming at you to get your butt off to pay your bills. Well, you get the picture.

You never know what’s going to happen next. Now this is arguably the top reason. This is especially true for games that have elements where when you do this or that, it may or may not have a reward or a good result. If you don’t get a good result this time, you think to yourself, “Maybe I will next time.” And you keep trying and trying before you realize that you’ve been at it for hours.
